Road Town, located on Tortola, is the capital of the British Virgin Islands. It is situated on the horseshoe-shaped Road Harbour in the centre of the island's south coast. The population was about 9,400 in 2004.[2] The name is derived from the nautical term "the roads", a place less sheltered than a harbour but which ships can easily get to. A 28 hectares (69 acres) development called Wickham's Cay,[3] consisting of two areas that were reclaimed from the sea and a marina, have enabled Road Town to emerge as a haven for yacht chartering and a centre of tourism.[4][5] This area is the newest part of the city and the hub for the new commercial and administrative buildings of the BVI. The oldest building in Road Town, HM Prison on Main Street, dates from the 1840s.

The islands make up part of the Virgin Islands archipelago, the remaining islands constitute the US Virgin Islands and the Spanish Virgin Islands. The official name of the Territory is still simply the "Virgin Islands", but the prefix "British" is often used to distinguish it from the neighbouring American territory which changed its name from the "Danish West Indies" to "Virgin Islands of the United States" in 1917. British Virgin Islands government publications continue to begin with the name "The Territory of the Virgin Islands", passports simply refer to the "Virgin Islands", and all laws begin with the words "Virgin Islands". Moreover, the Territory's Constitutional Commission has expressed the view that "every effort should be made", to encourage the use of the name "Virgin Islands".[5] The British Virgin Islands consist of the main islands of Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke, along with over fifty other smaller islands and cays. About 15 of the islands are inhabited. The capital, Road Town, is situated on Tortola, the largest island, which is approximately 20 km (12 mi) long and 5 km (3 mi) wide. The islands have a population of about 27,800, of whom approximately 23,000 live on Tortola. British Virgin Islanders are classed as British Overseas Territories citizens and since 2002 have had full British citizenship. Although the territory is not part of the European Union and not directly subject to EU law, its citizens are deemed to be citizens of the EU as well. Ravishingly beautiful, the British Virgin Islands (BVI) encompass more than 60 islands scattered like emeralds between the Caribbean Sea and the North Atlantic. In 1666 British planters took over the islands from the original Dutch settlers, and they attained the status of British colony. Today the BVI remain a Territory under the British Crown and are world-renowned for their excellent sailing, yachting, chartered boat voyages, many dive sites, and dazzling beaches. The principal islands are Tortola, Virgin Gorda, Anegada, and Jost Van Dyke. Home to the capital city of Road Town, Tortola is the most populated of the islands and a gateway to the archipelago. Except for Anegada, all these islands are volcanic with dramatic landscapes of lush peaks plunging to crystal clear bays. Anegada, a fishing hotspot, is almost completely flat and comprised of coral and limestone with spectacular stretches of white-sand beach. Virgin Gorda and Jost Van Dyke lure discerning nature lovers and many boaters seeking a more secluded island experience. All the islands are idyllic for diving, snorkeling, and sunbathing, including the many smaller "Out Islands" of the BVI such as popular Peter Island and Norman Island. Deep sea, bonefishing, and reef fishing are also popular pursuits
